In 1997 two business people, Edwin Claassen and Tharina Terblanche went to Italy and explored the possibilities of opening a tannery in their hometown Wolwehoek, Sasolburg.
To supply the industry with world-class wet blue leather coming from our feedlots.
One year later, in February 1998, EAC TANNERY PTY LTD came into production and today has a tanning capacity of 1500 hides per day. At Midland Tannery we only use the best green hides from our feedlots and surrounding abattoirs. We tan our hides chemically to the Wet Blue stage and supply Wet Blue hides locally and Internationally to the shoe and motor industry, which requires premium hides.
We are always striving to improve our product through research and are proud to announce that we have our own pilot plant and laboratory. We are proud to state that in 2010 we acquired Midland Leather – KZN in Port Shepstone. This was a factory that produced Finished Shoe Leather from Wet Blue. In 2013 the factories were consolidated at Wolwehoek, Sasolburg in the Free State province. Midland Tannery is the only tannery in the country that can produce Finished Leather for the shoe industry, all the way from Raw Hides. We have a full turnkey shoe upper tannery. Midland Tannery also acquired the Midland Leather Boutique, this is a Leather shop in Parys, Free State that sells our finished leather, Nguni hides and manufactured Leather goods to the public.
Under the management of Rudie Nieuwoudt, we are committed to our environment and our local community and will continuously try to add more value to our products. This will allow us to employ, train and develop more people in our local community.
